Focusing on the Positive

“Frodo Lost. Bush Has The Ring.”

Just today I saw this funny bumper sticker on someone’s car. Isn’t it hard at times to believe in good when things appear to be so bad? I, too, often find myself jumping on the Bush ambush until I realize I am perpetuating the very negativity that I am complaining about. Remember that old song that contains the lines… “what the world needs now is love, sweet love; no not just for some, but for everyone.” It’s easy to love those who don’t challenge us, but the real practice is to love those who do.

I don’t usually read the newspaper but this week I read it several times. If you believe what you read, you would think there are only bad things going on in the world. What a horrible picture it paints of the human race! We get programmed to focus on a negative interpretation of life – in the world, in our minds, in our bodies. Life becomes a very fearful place where individuals are brainwashed to feel powerless. No wonder there are millions of people on anti-depressants and happy drug companies. I wonder what would happen if on any given day you could pick up a newspaper and read about uplifting things happening in the world.

We are in these bodies, feel emotions and think thoughts – but who is in control of these experiences? Are you those transitory physical sensations? Are you those erratic emotions or repetitive thoughts? I think not. The outer will always change, but connecting with who you really are beyond those expressions passing through – now we’re talking about the “peace that passeth all understanding”. That kind of peace doesn’t make sense in this world with all the doom and gloom, but sometimes not making sense is the sanest choice.

Think peaceful thoughts amidst the chaos. Love the person who has just hurt your feelings. Choose to be the observer of what is happening in life instead of a victim of what is always changing anyway. You have the choice of where to focus your energy. I once heard author Wayne Dyer say on a tape, “You can never be miserable enough to make someone else happy”. So why try? Spread joy! And enjoy the bumper stickers out there.
