Mistakes vs. Choices

"Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes."
Mahatma Gandhi
The other day a friend was asking me about a comment I made where I said I don’t have a lot of rules. This came after she shared with me a personal story and thought perhaps I would judge her for the choice she had made.
I have come to accept that sometimes I am not going to make the “best” choices or decisions but I also accept that they are always perfect in the moment. I certainly learn from each path I take. When I am led to a path which makes no sense, I trust there is a reason beyond my current understanding. Sometimes it isn’t until much later that I see why I needed to go that way and what it taught me. There is always so much more at work than we consciously realize. Our minds are quick to judge something as good or bad, but the spirit simply enjoys each experience as another way to expand awareness.
To live an authentic life means to make choices that express the uniqueness of who you are. One meaning of authentic is “not counterfeit or copied”. Another is “not changed from the original or uncorrupted”. Sometimes I observe myself adhering to some unconscious rule with others or with myself. I am always grateful for the awareness so I can look at it and see if it truly reflects who I am or if it is just some old belief or behavior to be released.
We all choose what rules we live by, consciously or unconsciously. Driving home a little while ago I saw a bumper sticker that said ‘I can’t be both Catholic & ProChoice’. I immediately wondered why not. The rules you choose may reflect an authentic expression of your truth regardless of whether or not that goes against popular opinion. Or you may choose to go along with the program without even knowing if it reflects what is true for you. Either way, it is a choice. As I reflect on those in history (and alive) that I admire, they are all people who led and lead others into a greater consciousness by challenging the rules. If we were meant to live from a herd mentality than I think we would have been born cows.
I decided to change the name of the Center over a year ago. Prior to changing it I shared my idea of the name we currently have with a healer I know. She really didn’t like it. She felt it was too vague and didn’t say what the Center was about. I thought ‘good’ then it’s the perfect name, because inner truth will look differently for each of us. My intent is for people to walk in the door and discover more of who they really are, not just add on another layer of programming.
As I say in class, create the steps as you walk Trust your wisdom to lead you where you need to go. Make choices that speak to your soul even when they make no sense. And surrender to the way in which life brings you the perfect opportunities to know yourself and thus to know God. And most importantly, take time to laugh.
