Transcending Fear

I read a wonderful story in a book by Richard Bach last year about overcoming fear. In his childhood, he was extremely frightened of heights. Countless times his brothers would climb up the four story water tower while Richard never made it past the third step without being paralyzed with fear. He eventually began to go to the water tower on his own determined to climb it. Each time he would take a few steps up the ladder, fear would overtake him, and he would climb back down. One day, he went to the water tower and although his fear was as strong as ever, decided that this was the day he was going to climb to the top. And he did; rung after frightening rung. Once on top, he was in awe of what he could see from so far above the ground. From this early experience he lea rned that one always gets to choose whether to live a life of fear or a life of wonder. As an adult he became a pilot in love with the views from up high.

I, too, have worked with a life long fear of heights. I once climbed a mountain and had to stop to cry to release some of my fear before I could continue on. Last year in the midst of making major changes in my life that brought up a lot of fear, I decided to go paragliding as way to face it. Right before takeoff, I felt that familiar feeling of anxiety and near panic starting and at that moment I decided I wasn’t going to be afraid. As the wing gently lifted up I felt breathless not with fear but with amazement. There I was floating in the air, birds flying nearby, looking down at the splendor of this beautiful planet. This time I wanted to cry in gratitude. Had I let fear be my master I would never have had that life altering moment.

You see fear is only paper tiger pretending to be real. It’s not to be revered as a God or suppressed, but looked at for what it is – an energy that closes you off to the wondrous mystery of the unknown. It’s the voice of fear that says you are powerless to go beyond some limit or challenge. It will tell you not to change or open to a new opportunity that shows up in your life. Don’t believe it! Instead of contracting into a fearful place choose to expand into a new sense of wonder and possibility. What a view from there!
